Colosseum Tour

The largest amphitheatre in Rome was built by Vespasian in the early years of his reign, in 69 BC in the valley among the Palatine, the Esquiline and the Caelian Hill. This area in the past was occupied by the artificial lake of the Domus Aurea built by the Emperor Nero. The name "Colosseum" spread in the Middle Ages and derives from the deformation of the adjective colossal in reference to its enormous dimensions; the building, in fact, forms an oval of 527 meters perimeter and the surface exceeds 3,350 square meters. There is also another theory for which the amphitheatre has this nickname, which refers to the huge bronze statue placed near the monument.

Used, before Domitian as a scenario of naval battles, the spaces of the amphitheatre were then reserved for games of gladiators and hunt of wild animals. It is worth mentioning the enormous quantity of material that was necessary for the construction of this mammoth work: 100,000 cubic meters of travertine and 300 tons of iron! With the end of the Roman Empire, the Colosseum underwent a long phase of decadence. From a grandiose theatre of ancient Rome, the monument was transformed into a quarry of materials for the construction of St. Peter's Basilica and private buildings. Due to the looting of the Renaissance and the damage caused by earthquakes, today only one third remains of the original Colosseum. It is an incredible fortune, for us today, to be able to enter and take a dip in the past.

With over 7 million visitors counted last year, the Colosseum is confirmed in first place among the five places of Italian culture. The large numbers of which it is the protagonist are the main cause of the long waiting lines that visitors are forced to do in order to visit the ancient amphitheatre.
In order to shorten the tedious downtimes, it is necessary to book a skip the line ticket. In this way it is possible to obtain a privileged entrance that will allow you to enter the monument at any time by considerably shortening the waiting time.
