THE COLOSSEUM: THE EMBLEM OF THE POWER OF ROME

Who among us has never visited or would like to visit the Colosseum? This historic monument is visited every year by millions of visitors. The Flavian Amphitheatre, its original name, measures 48 meters in height and 189 meters in circumference. It has an elliptical shape that extends over a flat area previously occupied by a lake that is part of the Domus Aurea garden. The structure has 80 entrances placed under as many arches arranged on three orders and interspersed with columns in the three classic styles: Doric, Ionic and Corinthian.
Considering the large size, you would think that it took many years to be built. Iin fact, it took a little more than five years (75 to 80 A.D.) This is an extraordinary challange considering that approximately 100 thousand cubic meters of travertine have been transported from Olbia to build it.

Immagine how many workers and slaves were emplyed in its construction. The Colosseum had the purpose to definitively consecrate the Flavian dynasty as imperial dynasty. The Colosseum was then used as a place of entertainment for the Roman people, inside different shows of various kinds took plce: battles between gladiators, battles between beasts and even naval battles. The structure was exceptionally filled with water through an ingenious hydraulic system of pumps and levers. The amphitheatre among other things was equipped with a tent called "Velarium" that according to the intensity of the sun was deployed above the stands of the spectators to repair them.
