Borghese Gallery in Rome

BORGHESE GALLERY iN ROME: THE MOST BEAUTIFUL COLLECTION OF THE WORLD

The collection was created starting from 1607 at the behest of Cardinal Scipione Borghese who undertook an intense architectural commission, starting a systematic acquisition of works of art that make his collection one of the greatest for that era. The core of the gallery was born exposing the paintings of Caravaggio, Tiziano and Raffaello Sanzio, which were added to the splendour of modern marbles. From 1615 until 1623 Gian Lorenzo Bernini performed for the cardinal the well-known sculptural groups that still make up the fulcrum of the main collection, never been moved from their original position: the Aeneas Anchises and Ascanius, the Rape of Proserpina, the David, the Apollo and Daphne.

Since the origins of the project, the Villa was thought to be a place of culture: museum, with the exhibition of images of ancient art to be compared to those of the modern age; place of contemplation of nature with plants, rare animals and fossil specimens. But also a place to study and a library to better understand modern technology (automata, mirrors, lenses, watches).
