The Markets of Trajan are an archaeological complex with absolutely unique characteristics in Rome. The monument has lived the evolution of the city from the Imperial Age to the present day: strategic administrative center of the Imperial Forum, aristocratic residence, military fortress, prestigious convent and barracks.
Now the Trajan's Market hosts the Museum of the Imperial Forums referred the Markets of Trajan were an integral part.
The extensive complex of Roman buildings in brick, known as Trajan's Market, is miraculously come down to us from the heart of the ancient city, in close connection with the large squares of the Imperial Forums, and still is in the center of the modern city.

IMPERIAL FORUMS MUSEUM
Under the name "Imperial Forums" indicate the five monuments of Imperial commission constructed in topographic continuity with the Roman Forum old Royal-republican and substituted religious, political and administrative.
For their installation it was modified the orography and were sacrificed parts inhabited and public structures, even sacred. Every complex was designed in conceptual and physical relationship with the previous ones, and they communicated through openings on various sides.
From the viewpoint urban and architectural, the Imperial Forums are monumental squares arcaded with exedra, with axial and centralized installation; a quadrangular shape, have dimensions and orientation different, in relation to the spaces and, in part, to a preexisting structure; the end wall was emphasized by the temple dedicated to the protecting divinity of Emperor, whose presence was evoked repeatedly by his representation on horseback or in a quadriga, the inscriptions with the name and symbolic references of iconography and decorative motifs.
The Museum of the Imperial Forums finds its ideal location within the monumental complex of the Trajan's Market. The museum proposes to illustrate the architecture of the ancient Imperial Forums and their architectural and sculptural decoration.

THE TRAJAN'S MARKETS: THE ONLY EXAMPLE OF ANCIENT MARKET REMAINED IN THE WORLD

The Museum of the Imperial Fora and the Trajan's Markets was opened to the public in 2007 and it is a complex of great importance for Italian and international archeology.
It is located along via dei Fori Imperiali, but the entrance is from via IV Novembre which is accessed from the right side of Piazza Venezia.
This museum complex is the first museum of ancient architecture and it exposes the recompositions of architectural and decorative parts of the imperial forums: The Forum of Caesar (46 BC), the Forum of Augustus (2 BC), the Forum of Nerva (97 AD), the Temple of Peace (75 AD) and the Trajan's Market (112 and 113 AD).
The main structure of the museum runs on two levels. On the first floor there are the niches of the old "edicolae", the shops of the traders o the antiquity. Inside you can admire the remains of the decorations of the various temples found during the archaeological excavations of the twentieth century.
On the second floor there are other edicolae where temporary exhibitions of art and fashion are usually set up and where access is found inside the Trajan's Market
The real peculiarity is walking inside what were to be the old shops, divided on various levels and connected by stone staircases.

THE TRAJAN'S MARKETS: A SINGLE TICKET TO WALK INTO THE HISTORY

The Trajan's Market is one of the rare examples in which with the entrance ticket it is possible to walk inside the remains of what was the first department store model of ancient history.
The ticket, which is advisable to book in advance, is valid for an entire day from 9.00 to 18.00, with the possibility of access to the walking floor where the ancient Romans of the imperial era strolled for "shopping".
Better wearing comfortable shoes suitable for walking over the disused stones of the lower area of the archaeological site and to avoid the visit during the hottest hours of the summer months.
We also suggest you to carry out the visit accompanied by an authorized private guide who can best illustrate you the various archaeological phases of the building.
